Chapter Six
There were more than twenty enlisted men and non-coms on the compound as Steele crossed to the gates, busy with building fires for warmth and light and arranging a double bank of chairs around an area encircling the flagpole. They worked cheerfully, in keen anticipation of the reward for their labors. The Virginian was ignored until Trooper Austin came down from his sentry post on the wall to draw the bar from its brackets on the double gates. "Hey, mister. Are them women whores or ain't they?" "Matter of opinion, feller." The soldier's dark brown, deeply lined face took greater hold on its expression of frustration. "But you been ridin' with them, mister. You must know." "Know one thing, feller, " Steele answered as one of the gates was opened wide enough for him to pass through the gap. "What?" "With these women, you've got two things going for you." "Yeah?" Austin was eager now. "You wear pants and you've got something inside them." Austin grinned. "Easy as that, uh?" Then his tone changed as Steele stepped outside the fort. "Hey, what' with you and Swenson, mister? There ain't nothin' out there but rock, dust and cold. And white-hatinâ Apaches if you're that unlucky." "My kind of country," the Virginian muttered as he started toward the edge of the hill's level top. Austin grunted and closed the gate. This seemed to make the air colder and deepen the darkness of the moon shadows. The surrounding hills looked bleaker the walls of the fort higher and more impregnable. So that the very atmosphere of night suddenly possessed quality of eerie hostility. "You lied to me, Steele!" Swenson rasped the accusation as the Virginia reached the top of the track. He was sitting on a rock some fifteen feet below, aiming a cocked Army Colt toward the short, lean figure who had halted above him. He held the gun in a double handed grip, much as his daughter did, with the base of the butt clenched between his thighs. "When was that, feller?" Steele asked evenly, his stance casual and his expression relaxed. The moon was behind the man below him and he could read nothing of the expression on the shadowed face. "Sally was aboard that rig. Her valise is in the boot. Monogrammed special the way I had done before I give it to her on her last birthday." "I say she wasn't?" "You didn't say she was, Steele!" "You reckoned your daughter wouldn't ride with whores. Why you pointing a gun at me, feller?" Swenson's teeth gleamed in a silent snarl. "Sally's out here someplace. I couldn't be sure of that until you came out. She could have left them anywhere. But you didn't come out for fresh air." "Nor to have a gun pointed at me, feller." "You know why Sally's run away from home, Steele?" "You told me. To marry a feller you don't like." There was a pause. "Yeah, I did tell you. That's right.
